𝐐𝐮𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲:

"We know how to teach reading.

We know what works.

We have neurological understandings."

-𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥

Another quote:

"It's like having a cure for cancer and waving it and saying- Go get it for yourself."

This is an interesting quote from the film:

"Children have brains like sponges.

Something is wrong if a child is going backward with reading/writing instruction."

Too many students are labeled dyslexic.

Could it be that all children are not receiving the CORRECT instruction?

Teachers do not have the information. They were never equipped. It's not their fault.

Many teachers have had reading degrees and never heard the word dyslexia in their graduate classes.

One interview was quite striking for me:

David Chalk- cyber security specialist- millionaire- taught himself programming- could not read.

The question posed in the film:

"How did I get to high school and not be able to read?"

𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐏𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐋𝐎𝐍𝐆.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐄𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐒𝐘𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐌 𝐈𝐒 𝐏𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐏𝐄𝐎𝐏𝐋𝐄.

Reading problems result in behavior problems, low self-esteem, and depression.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐞?

"𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝. 𝐖𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠! 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐮𝐬 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝟗𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝."

Cognitive science about reading has not made its way into American education.

A teacher in the film is asked: "Why are your scores so much higher?"

She replied, "I am not using the district's curriculum."

Genesee County Jail: People become better when they can read. There is a direct correlation between school to prison pipeline.

85% of kids in the juvenile system cannot read.

Another quote from an educator:

"It pisses me off that people play with children's lives."

"Superintendents have POWERFUL roles."

STUDENTS' LIVES DEPEND ON WHAT WE DO INSTRUCTIONALLY.

Let's get going!
