WHY DOES A SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST BECOME A READING SPECIALIST? MEET CAROLYN CAVALIGOS.

  • As a speech pathologist, Carolyn started with a reading goal for an eighth-grade student who did not know sound/letter correspondences.

  • This student, from an impoverished community, had IEP goals that did NOT meet his needs.

  • CAROLYN ASKED, "What will the student do for a job?"

  • Carolyn asked this critical question: "WHAT DOES THE STUDENT NEED?"

  • Carolyn decided to attend Mount Saint Joseph for reading certification in Cincinnati, Ohio.

  • She earned her Speech Language degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL.

  • CAROLYN STATES: "Kids need to learn to read to be an active part of our democracy and society. Even reading health care information is essential."

  • Carolyn believes SUPERINTENDENTS need to pay attention to the science of literacy.

  • If the top leaders are not on board with the science of reading, it won't happen in a district.

  • WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? Carolyn: "Reading research is beautiful. Why would we ignore this evidence?"

  • Carolyn: "I had a choice for a different life because I can read!"
